Engineering Geology Laboratory

GST lab has of recently extended its services into Engineering/Geotechnical Services. The Geotechnical lab was established in 2014 to serve various stake-holders especially in the Construction Sector. The lab is capable of characterizing physical behavior of pebble/rock, bim (concrete cube), brick and clay for various applications including the construction of infrastructures such as buildings, roads and dams.

Services offered by Engineering Geology Laboratory

  1. Soil testing e.g triaxial, direct/ residual test, particle size distribution, permeability, atterberg limits consolidation;
  2. Aggregate test e.g abration, impact value, ten percent fines, flakiness index, elongation index, crushing value, particle density and water absorption;
  3. Rocks mechanics testing e.g permeability of core, determination of porosity, uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength, tensile strength of material, point load strength point, determination of young’s modulus and fish’s ration;
  4. Bim and brick tests (Concrete Cubes and Brick Test);
  5. Provide guidance to various stakeholders in identifying the best possible areas to development activities such as geo-technical investigations;
  6. Slope stability analysis for geo-hazards studies.
Los Angeles abrasion machine. Used for testing course aggregates for resistance to Abrasion.
A digital shear testing machine is used to determine the consolidated drained shear strength of a soil material; in direct shear.
